|Description ||The Miners Barrow! This slag heap really shouldn’t be here. Situated in an area where coal was once extensively mined this has been confirmed by the local archeology unit to be the remains of a bell pit. Illustrated also: Bottom Left - A group of bell pits close by on Great Hill - just waiting to be described as a barrow cemetery!! Bottom Right - An eroded section of Moortop ‘Barrow’ showing mining waste.|
|Sadly one of the characteristics of bell pits is that they don't leave much spoil. Spoil heaps very rarely have a round cross-section, as this heap clearly does. One of the common characteristics of bowl barrows is a concave summit - just like this one has. Erroneously describing this barrow as spoil heap - without any evidence for a coal mine - is deeply offensive and against the spirit of enthusiastic research.|
