Description A view from the top of the mound looking east.I have circled what i believe to be the remains of two of the other mounds which used to be here. They can just be made out in the field next door as slight humps.
Apparently there where six mounds here before WWII.

Hi Gautrek. If we're looking east here, am I right in thinking that the causeway bridge is out of sight in the distance? (If not, can you tell me where it would be in relation to this pic?)

I'm sorry but i don't know which bridge you are talking about. As i'm not from this area and it was just a flying visit after dropping my lad off to play rugby. The road which passes this mound is directly behind me as i took this picture. This direction faces towards the main A50 roundabout. I would sugets using multimap and sticking DE73 1UA in as a post code. This shows the area well.

The bridge is an ancient causeway at Swarkestone, going south-north towards the A50. I take it when travelling into Derby at the end of my journey from Devon, to see my son and family. Thanks for the tip re multimap. If you look on the site page (click on yellow highlight), you'll see that Infinite Fate and I have discussed how to get to the barrow. This afternoon I actually found a Derby City Council 'Swarkestone Circular Walk' map/leaflet I once picked up in Derby, that suggests a route around the area, but still fails to mention the presence (or whereabouts) of the barrow! However, it does name 'Barrow upon Trent' to the far left of the map, west of the River Trent!

You can see the mound from the A50 roundabout. Its just visable on the horizon. If you take the swarkestone exit of the A50 roundabout and then follow this road until it swings left. But instead of going left turn right at the nasty junction on the corner. Then take the next right at the road with the nursery on the corner.Follow this road over a couple of nasty hump back bridges and then you will see the mound on the right just before you go back over the A50.Its dead easy to find.I also paid a visit to the local church which you can see from the mound. It has some very nice medieval tombs in side and what looks like a medieval cross in the graveyard.

Thanks gautrek. Next time I'm up that way I shall follow your helpful directions!
