The granite menhir stands in the garden of a cottage at Tolvan Cross, and is over 7 foot tall. Towards the base a large round hole measures 17 inches in diameter. This was used in fertility rites - the couple wanting a baby had to pass through the hole, or it could have been used for healing purposes. The stone has a bevelled edge, possibly caused by ropes used in moving and placing the stone into position. |
