I love this, Jim; you're giving me ideas for playing with long exposure on my camera this winter! Very mystic feel to it, especially with the 'aura' above the stone and 'orb' to its right.

The aura looks like possible aurora borealis! We are now going into 11 year solar cycle as coronal mass ejections are becoming more prolific and producing spots that have magnetic fields that are backwards. This is the pattern for the next cycle so, within the next 5/6 years we enter solar max.

Definitely not aurora borealis - it was water vapour. It was a very cool clear evening, and as it got later there was more dew and vapour around - its why I finished taking these pics after this one as there was a lot of 'fuzz' due to the vapour. I cannot claim any credit for this method of taking photos of stones at night - someone here on the Portal once described their version of the technique as "painting with light", which was cannily accurate. Here's a good example: link.

It may not be aurora but looks reminicent. Since i've been studying space weather it's amazing how many you can catch with a camera! There has also been alot of activity on the sun recently

I've never seen the aurora "live" - would like to one day though.
