Many thanks for these superb photos, EB | thecaptain (2006-04-26) | This is a fine stone, isnt it. I am in total agreement with you Thorgrim that crosses evolved from standing stones. I have thought this for many years, which was mostly brought on by the wonderful (and surprisingly not on the portal) Long Tom near the Hurlers. Then travelling round Brittany last year really forced this opinion home, where the probable progression from rough menhirs, to shaped and smoothed menhirs, to Iron Age Steles, and then to carved crosses can all be seen practically side by side. |
