(2005-08-15) | Not Chinese! It is a benchmark and marks a point of known elevation. Surveyors used them when mapmaking. It serves as a reference point in running a line of levels for the determination of further levels. They are often seen on the wall of a church or on a concrete plinth on a hill or mountain top. |
