Having read the description of this site again, it became obvious that the described cairn was the oval barrow near to the west end of the common by the round house. So I went to have another look, with more determination to get pictures.
With a bit more careful gardening, tramping down the dead bracken and brambles, many more large stones protruding from the barrow come into view. Are these the remains of what was once a chamber within the mound ? There are still more stones under the brambles, which were a bit too well overgrown for me to expose easily.
