Near the southern edge of the common, about midway along and just to the north of the boundary hedge, can be found a couple of large mounds, and many stones and rocks can be seen. It is difficult to know what to make of these remains, which are to be found amongst the deep undergrowth. Probably the remains of two or three round barrows closely positioned, but perhaps it was once a long barrow on a northwest to southeast axis which has been significantly altered.
At the centre of the remains is what is now a round mound with the obligatory depression on the top, where past excavations have been made. There is still a substantial ditch surrounding the mound, and around the outside of this ditch is a complete circle of large stones, with a diameter of approximately 25 metres, the stones generally being about 3 feet by two feet by one foot thick. Are these stones an ancient circle surrounding the barrow, or are they something more modern ? They don’t give me the impression of being ancient, and I am sure I haven’t discovered a new stone circle ! However, within the ditch at certain places, are some large stones which do seem weathered enough to have been there for thousands of years, are these the remains of some sort of chamber ? |
