Description Diagram explaining the section through the hill and phases of construction. There have been three major episodes of intervention 1776 a vertical shaft sunk to find gold; 1849 the Rev Merewether looking for King Sel bored in from the side; and then in 1968-9 Professor Richard Atkinson (for a BBC Chronicle programme) followed but expanded the earlier lateral tunnel.
