| Posted Comments: Thorgrim (2005-10-25) | Now that photo is your best one to date, Ken! Astonishing and perfect - the low sunlight of the Golden Hour, the texture of the stones and the backdrop of that wonderful dark sky. A real prize winner in any competition. Does the Irish Tourist Board publish your work? | kenwilliams (2005-10-25) | Luckiest one to date perhaps! I got here and it was really miserable, just as it is in the hills in the background but after about 40 minutes I got around 6 minutes of gorgeous evening light raking across the plateau. Brought out the texture of the stones and the ground nicely as you point out. I haven't had any photos published anywhere yet in print but I've a small exhibition next year so we'll see what happens if anything! | thecaptain (2005-10-26) | these pictures of yours are so wonderful Ken, that they make me want to totally give up ! I have to keep telling myself that they are a work of art by a dedicated photographer, rather than a snap by a passing visitor, and so I should not be comparing them to mine ! | Thorgrim (2005-10-26) | Come on Cap - you have taken some really excellent pix yourself. Ken is in a class of his own, but that shouldn't discourage the rest of us. I am amazed that he hasn't had any published yet. How about an article describing your tips and techniques Ken? | DavidRaven (2005-10-26) | That is just brilliant! Gotta agree with you Cap', it is a hard act to follow. The article would be good - let us in on how you get them so good! | kenwilliams (2005-10-27) | An article? You could fill a book with suggestions for even the most likely combination of conditions you come across! I'm not sure there's any paticular things I'm doing, just drawing on the experience I've had over the last year and making dozens of mini-decisions for each angle and change of weather. I think it would be hard to put it in a 'step by step' guide. I'm not being coy, I'm sure I could put a top ten tips together based on what I've found over the last year and hopefully someone will get something out of it.
Giving up is the opposite of what I intended by posting pics on here, I hoped it would inspire people to try different things, take in the sculptural aspect of the monuments and the enviorment they find themselves in. | Thorgrim (2005-10-27) | "based on what I've found over the last year" - Does that mean you have only been taking photographs for one year, Ken? Crikey - and I've been at it for more than 50! | kenwilliams (2005-10-27) | God no! I've been taking photos as a hobby for a little over three years, though I always wanted to be able to draw and paint but wasn't particulaly talented.. I guess learning about the great painters stuck into my subconcious, I dont think about composition rules when taking a photo but just go with what feels right which works often enough to get a few decent snaps. Photography is only really a stepping stone to trying to do what I wanted with pencils and paint I suppose. | Thorgrim (2005-10-27) | The great Cartier-Bresson abandoned photography for the pencil at the end of his long life. The pioneer photographers were very much into "drawing (or painting) with light" which is the literal meaning of photo - graphy. |
