Wedge tomb SMR co059-101/01
Cordprises gallery aligned E-W. Two sidestones to N and S, and backstone outside gallery walls at E end. Two outer wall stones and possible buttress-stone exposed along N side. Gallery covered by single roofstone; surrounded by mound incorporating field clearance which merges with fence to W. Inner face of backstone has deeply incised scorings; age and nature of this feature are uncertain.
The design of wedge tombs is relatively consistent and comprises a long, comparatively narrow burial gallery which is generally broader and higher at the entrance and tapers towards the rear. Radiocarbon dates from a number of excavated wedge tombs in south-west Ireland indicate a Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age (3000-1500 BC) date for the earliest of these monuments. |
