At the foot of Coomaeloghane mountain, with panoramic views over the north of the Beara Peninsula and the Kenmare estuary, Ardgroom stone circle is a delightful place to visit. The circle consists of nine particularly attractive and tall upright stones, one prostrate stone and a gap for an eleventh. A "playing card" stone, 2.5m in height, stands 6m to the east of the circle. The circle is aligned NNE-SSW with an internal measurement along this axis of about 7.25m. Unusually, the axial stone is a 1.4m tall, almost lozenge shaped, stone. The other stones in the circle are graded in height, increasing to the portals which stand approximately 2.1m in height. |
