Another inclusion in the regions’ Archaeosights leaflet - quite a way into wilderness country but the lane is a nice drive. Once you have found the relavant stile your walk begins. It is not a long walk but it is uphill, dark and wet (I wish I hadn’t watched The Blair Witch Project a night or two before!) but the King’s Cairn is worth the fear. Strangely the cairn (at NS55210090) is enclosed in a fence (easily crossed) and then a ramshackled dry stone wall.
Not in as good condition as the Glentrool Village White Cairn but interesting all the same as the cairn material has been stripped back to reveal the internal architecture and chambers.
Perhaps the walk wasn’t that scary but is was dark (due in part to poor weather conditions) and it was wet - wear welleis, don’t take your kids!
