Situated in a courtyard in Hammersmith Hospital. The plaque reads "The starting point for this work was the massive lump of rock, a treasured posession of this hospital. At the turn of the (20th) century when the hospital was a Poor Law Institute, this stone lay in the Labour Yard where the inmates broke up rocks for road making as a contribution for their night's accomodation.
This was the piece which they found unbreakable. The stone now lies in peace here at the centre of the hospital site, midway between the old and new buildings.
Jeremy Schrecker created and constructed the setting, the water symbolizing the flow of healing powers from the heart of the hospital.
The Japanese sculptor, Isamu Nogucki wrote: A stone is that from which we come, Is that to which we go back, Its the earth itself.
Jeremy Shrecker was born in 1962 and graduated from the Royal College of Arts in 1988. This work was commissioned by the Hammersmith Hospital Arts Committee in 1989."
