(2005-10-10) | Not sure I agree, Hamish. Tongue in Anglo-Saxon is "tunge". Starveall is not listed by Ekwall in his Dictionary of English Place-names so I think that it's fairly recent and means what it says - the land was poor and so didn't feed the locals - ie it starved all. Starveall is listed as a field or minor placename in Kenneth Cameron's English Place Names (1961). There are a number of farms and field names like that - Hungry Hill, Dry Drayton, Break Back, Empty Purse, Small Profits, Purgatory and even one called Starknaked! What stories of hardship, toil and disappointment they hint at! | thecaptain
(2005-10-10) | I know nothing of why or where the name comes from, but I cant imagine the land here to have ever been "poor". Could well be wrong though ! |
