Description In the centre of the village of Lower Swell, just off the village green to the northwest side can be found the Whittlestone. It sits on a grassy bank with a little sign stating that it was once part of a neolithic burial chamber, and had originally been further up the hill near to the churchyard.

Hi Captain,
Thanks for posting the Whittlestone! It looks as if there are some ringed cups and parallel grooves on top. Have you noticed them or am I carried away here?

I think I see what you are talking about. It never occurred to me at the time that there was anything there, so perhaps its just the way things have come out in the photo, looking at the larger original it doesnt really look like anything other than natural weathering to me.

All the stone round here is the soft yellowish Cotswold limestone, and it weathers quite easily, with many holes and suchlike forming. Just look at pictures of the nearby Rollright stones to see how they have weathered. And this stone has weathered in layers (layers from the sedimentation when the rock was formed) to leave the sort of grooves you can see here around the edges.

Not to say that it is definately all natural of course.
