I see the National Trust have taken over the management of Avebury on behalf of English Heritage. Lots of signs saying you can't! Parking bordering on the amateurish - main site closes at 1630, even in March when its light until 1900, and Avebury is best in the evening. Am I being too cynical - I've been visiting Avebury for 35 years and today it felt different. Welcome to Aveburyland. Soon it will be another Stonehenge! Shame. |

(2006-03-27) | Angie/Nicola. I'm not suggesting they could/will fence it off, or make it less accessible - there is an A road running through the middle of it after all. There are restrictions in place to prevent further erosion and this should be regarded as a good thing. Its the small changes - parking is no longer free, new tourist information, lots of signage. My fear is that they will over-manage it to the extent that it loses its magic; become too commercial. Avebury, to me, always had a magic because it was under-managed, left alone. My fear it that the National Trust will make it tourist attraction which will be its undoing. Perhaps I should restrict future visits to when the tourists go home, park at West Kennet and do the walk that takes in West Kennet, the sanctuary, Overton Barrows, ridgeway, Avebury and Silbury - in the evening, in the summer, when the hoards have gone. | nicoladidsbury

(2006-03-27) | Let's not be too pessimistic. Heavy visitor traffic will always cause problems with overuse, erosion, litter and damage. The really positive thing is the co-operation between the volunteers of the Avebury Guardians and the National Trust. Many of the volunteers are from the Pagan community bur not exclusively so.
