Clear carving detail, of scrolls, circling around berries, and geometric shapes.
There seems to be evidence that part of the edge has been smashed off, perhaps at the same time as when the cross shaft was destroyed.
The stone looks like it has been deliberately smashed, then left undisturbed in protective clay, until it was rediscovered.
Such a beautiful piece of carving, it must indicate that this place was once very important.
Perhaps one can even speculate, that this is the place visited by St Cuthbert, and then becoming a place of pligrimage, wealthy enough to commission the original cross.
