We found another standing stone in the stone wall nearby making me believe that this stone belongs to another circle |
| Posted Comments: AngieLake (2007-03-15) | Nicola! I've just looked in Burl's 'Circles of Stone' (Photos by Max Milligan). Under Castlerigg, he tells us that 3 or 4 robbed cairns were set up inside the circle, in the Bronze Age, when the ring had lapsed into disuse. "In turn those cairns were removed when some stones were removed to allow ploughs to be taken into the ring's interior and crops to be planted. An outlying stone almost a hundred yards away to the WSW, standing by a hedge, may have been one of those uprooted circle-stones. Perhaps just to get it out of the way it was buried close to the ring, but its pit was too shallow and plough-shares scraped along it, damaging them and scoring deep lines across its upper surface. Re-excavated it was dumped at the side of the field and used as a stile until put upright around 1913. Suggestions that it had been a prehistoric astronomical outlier to mark the November sunset were mistaken."
He makes no mention of the other stones which you think may include this one in a circle. (I feel a dowsing job coming on....!!) | nicoladidsbury (2007-03-18) | I would love it if you could dowse this Angie.
There are definately lines scratched down the surface of this stone, and of the other.
Does that mean the lines are plough marks?
I wonder when the walls were built?
