Visiting Maes Howe some years ago while on a business trip to Europe from NZ I thought how wonderful it would be to have a link with the people who built such a marvelous site so long ago. Inside the main chamber I saw the Viking runic graffiti scratched on the wall. The translations make for some rather crude comments by these Viking visitors a thousand years ago. Imagine my surprise when I eventually had my DNA tested and found that it was Norse Viking in origin!! My connection to Maes Howe was genuine as the Norse Vikings settled Britain via Orkney, but my connection was to the crude graffiti artists not the noble builders of Maes Howe!!

It's a great place to visit, isn't it Drew, and that DNA link must have been a fascinating discovery for you. What part of Europe did your more recent ancestors come from?

I can trace my father's side of our family back to the 1740's in King's Norton near Birmingham. On my mother's side I can trace them back to 1560 in Shipbourne in Kent. Genealogy is another of my interests.
