Old Sarum hillfort is the original Salisbury; this is a view of its outer rampart with the 'new' Salisbury (and its famous cathedral spire) visible through the trees. This southwestern portion of the chalky ramparts is quite densely covered with trees, unlike the rest of the defences (see other photos on this site): I guess they were planted to prettify the hill when viewed from the Salisbury side? The roots make walking this section of the rampart quite hard going. |
