This ‘folly’ circle along with the famous ‘Wizards Well’ was reputedly created in the 19th Century by a stone mason who was the great-great-grandfather of children’s author Alan Garner (author of The Weird Stone of Brazingamen). In an article in Cheshire Life in March 1991 Alan claimed that The Druid’s Circle was erected by his grandfather simply because ‘he wanted to get rid of some old stones’.
The circle was recorded in 1810 by Marriott in his ‘Antiquities of Lyme’ when he describes it in the minutest of detail, obviously believing it was real. The circle’s lack of authenticity and the antiquarian’s deception were commented upon in a local guide by Lady Stanley in 1843.
