The church's website describes this in one place as an 'iron age' burial mound. One assumes it would more likely be bronze age, especially given the context of the denuded barrows and stone circle remains towards Alsager.
The name of Lawton here is reference to the Anglo Saxon for "the settlement by the mound". Seemingly already a place of antiquity by the time of the Saxons.
A very imposing position, given the relative flatness of the landscape. It is recessed to the north of the A50. |
