Description Oxenham Arms, South Zeal, Devon SX651935. An enormous and magnificent menhir built into the wall of a tremendous pub on the main street in the village of South Zeal, Devon. In fact, the pub is believed to have been built by monks in the twelfth century around the menhir. As the pub website says "A very interesting part of the house is the small lounge behind the bar. In this room, set in the wall, is a monolith and the theory of archaeologists is that the monastic builders placed their house around this prehistoric stone shaped by man 5,000 years ago. Notwithstanding deep digging, its foundations have never been reached". Here is a picture of myself doing two things I enjoy at the same time, having a nice pint with an ancient stone. This is one stone which is still very much enjoying life !

What a perfect combination! An excellent place to conclude a day, or take a break from a day on the moors. :-) Cheers indeed.

It was something from the Sharp's brewery in Cornwall. Cant remember its name, but it wasnt the well loved Doom Bar though.

I am a french canadian living in Québec City, Québec, Canada. Surfing on the internet, I was amazed when discovering this site. I want to know more; why is this monolith called "Le Gasseau"? Thank you for your reply. Daniel Gasseau

Dont know how you have come to think this stone is called Le Gasseau, as it is not. However, we do have a page for the Le Gasseau megaliths in Mayenne, France. Please see http://www.megalithic.co.uk/article.php?sid=6333853 . Although I unfortunately couldnt fully locate them, and have no real details.

Hello. I am curious about the Joncas dolmen. Is it a Burial Chamber for the family who's surname is Joncas, or is it named so because someone with the surname Joncas discovered it, or for some other reason? - Regards, -Chuck in NYC

Superb shot, Captain! Beer and an ancient pub in Devon, built around a menhir! Seems a bit odd that Christian monks would revere an obvious pagan monument.....but maybe they knew stuff we don't!! Intriguing - and can fuel the imagination...or maybe an x files episode...? Probably the truth is weirder than the imagination....

Doesn't look like it Bernard, the white-painted wall seems to come between the stone and the ceiling beam.
