This wayside cross is aligned north to south and dates from the 11th century. It commemorates Siward (Syward) Earl of Northumbria and Lord of Tavy c1050. The cross was restored in 1848 after being broken.
The cross 2.07 metres high and is rectangular in shape. There is a worn inscription in memory of Siward and, another well-worn inscription saying BOC LAND or perhaps ROO LANDE marking the limits of land belonging to Buckland Abbey. A Latin-style cross is carved above this inscription |
