Apart from the polisher stone near to Avebury, how many others of these stones can be found in Britain these days ?
I ask this not really knowing of any others in Britain, but having found plenty of polissoir stones during my recent trip round France. They have lots and lots over there, many of which can be readily found and visited.
Visiting these stones brought me great joy, as its possible to sit there and sort of imagine people many thousands of years ago doing the same, polishing away at an axe head or suchlike, possibly making a valuable gift for an important person. They really bring home a sort of connection to the past, perhaps more so than any other monument.

Brilliant! You beat me too it!
I was going to put out an appeal to anyone who knows of polishing stones anywhere else.
There are a few listed on this site which we have checked out or are in the process of.
There have been a lot of polished hand axes found around Avebury.
I found the business end of one during the dig at West Kennet avenue in 2003.
I know of several locals who have fabulous examples in their possesion, one farmer found a whole cache near Hackpen white horse many years ago and still has them.
If Avebury had between 500 - 600 stones within the complex then thats a lot of tree's needed for levers and/or rollers so lots of axes to cut the tree's.
