Hi, I've been designing a tattoo based on the Z-Rod designs from pictish symbol stones.

I'm particularly attracted to the Z-Rod and double-sun combination.

What do people generally think these designs symbolised?

According to Elizabeth Sutherland in the Pictish Guide - they possibly signify a broken spear which indicates death. They are usually seen crossing another symbol which is probably the totem symbol of an individual. So a Z-rod over another symbol could mean the death of the owner of that symbol. Alternative meaning is ancestral warrior protection.

But no one really knows.

Thanks, it's funny when you read through the web looking for speculation as to the meanings of various pictish symbols, you often read phrases like

"there is much speculation and many theories, but noone really knows what they mean." - actually finding anyone speculating on what they might mean is very rare.

Here's my go.

I propose that the z-rod is a peace symbol, a broken spear - the end of hostility. when it's seen with the snake it would be a death symbol, but when seen with the double circles it suggests union, marriage or truce.

Just an idea - no one's going to say I'm bonkers, are they?

Your interpretation is as good as any I've seen. If it works for you - go with it.
