I decided pretty early on in the year that this summer I wanted to go for a bit of a trek around and observe some prehistoric monuments this summer before I go to study Archaeology at Reading.
It'll give me some time to clear my head and also immerse myself in the subject in preparation for the course.
I like walking alot so I've decided to take a couple of weeks off work at the beginning of August and hike through Devon and Cornwall. I was just wondering if anyone had any particular favourite sites in these two counties which I could perhaps structure my route around.
I've never been to either county before so any suggestions would be most welcome. From the photo's I've seen, the Dolmen's look particularly spectacular!
Thanks in advance,
Brent

Hello,
About a year ago me and my partner did a similar thing and trekked around some of the sites on dartmoor; we took the car and camped out on the moors and trekked out to various sites during the day. We had a great time. The places I would recommend are;
Dartmoor;
Fernworthy; nice stone circle in a forest.
Grey Wethers; double circle near to Fernworthy, a bit further along the same path.
Merrivale; a couple of stone rows, a small circle, and a lot of hut circles quite close to Princetown.
Drizzlecoombe; very well known site, stone rows (lots of them), round barrows, bronze age settlements. Isolated.
Grimspound; Bronze age settlement, owned by English Heritage, in suprisingly good condition for it's age.
Sousson's Common;small, well preserved circle in nice location near the edge of a road.
Brisworthy; impressive circle not far from Drizzlecoombe.
Scorhill; large-ish circle in a very desolate part of the moor, also stone rows and clapper bridges nearby.
......and that's just the tip of the iceberg, their just some of my favourites. The Nine Stones of Belstone are pretty cool too.
Bodmin Moor;
Stannon; very impressive circle close to a china clay works; other monuments nearby, including;
King Arthur's Hall; an embanked stone square, some controversy about it's exact age.
Trippet Stones; I think that's what it's called ( it's very close to another site called the Stripple stones, which makes it a bit confusing, but I think the Stripple stones is a ploughed over henge with only a couple of stones left ), a circle of big stones, high up on the moor.
Of course there's loads more to see. Enjoy your trip!
Daffy.

I'd suggest you do a search on the forums here - this subject comes up time and time again. There is so much to see in Land's End alone, a week isn't enough time for just this small area, let alone considering Dartmoor and Bodmin...
