Hi,
one stone that's not on your map: The Bellstone, in the middle of Shrewsbury. I'm guessing this is some sort of important boundary stone, but online references only mention that charles darwin saw it!
Would anyone know more? It seems a shame that the original use is being forgotten.
I have a fairly good pic if anyone wants it-email me.

Hi Martin - thanks for this
Is this just off St John's Hill? The sites & monuments record appears not to mention it, but there is The Bellstone House at SJ 4897 1248
(Bellstone House-16thC.and later(site of)
Given Shrewsbury's strong mediaeval past, I would suspect it is not of prehistoric origin, but please, I would love to have a look. Maybe something Wolverhampton's Bargain Stone.
Please mail shropstones@tiscali.co.uk
Look forward to learning more,
cheers

The archaeology data service also does not list it.

Hi Tim,
it's outside Morris Hall, which is a pretty much hidden building (mock Medieval arts and crafts I think...if it's real it's in good nick) close to the museum. It is at the bottom of St John's Hill, going towards Claremont hill, and there's an archway between some shops leading to Morris Hall. The road at the bottom is called Bellstone, so I'm guessing that's where the stone used to be.
Feel free to put the pic up on the site. It may not be megalithic, but anyone going to Shrewsbury museum could easily pop across and see it.
if it's not in the smr, it would be well worth telling them if you're connected. There's no saying that boundary stones can't be earlier of course...have you seen the layout of Shrewsbury? I'd be amazed if there wasn't at the very least an iron age promontory fort underneath.
Boundary Stones do get neglected. There's one outside King's Cross Station which is just so sad looking....

Hi Martin; I've replied to you by email; it's a glacial erratic which is covered by The Portal, so tomorrow I'll put the pic up with credit to yourself.
Excellent stuff. Thanks again
