I recently came across the "Inca Cross" which seems to be an "invented tradition" - Wikipedia.

I would say what the new-age druids get up to at Stonehenge is along these lines.

I guess there are other examples (e.g. anything to do with aliens).

I’d agree with you, David.
The past is often presented as a version of the present, with objects given modern labels. Another similar issue is anthropomorphism of items, with little evidence. Eg calling a rock a ‘venus’ just because it has dots on it.

Fake "American Indian" rituals, crafts, legends and "traditions" abound.

They often have a tiny kernel of actual indigenous tool, craft or ritual, like the modern "dreamcatcher" craft item which appears to have its origin in an actual good luck charm resembling a spider web in a willow hoop (Ojibwe origin) hung over infant's cradles.

David Morgan and I saw a group of young people (who appeared to be Christians of some denomination) conducting some sort of ritual activity involving flags and mini "ram's horns" on top of Monk's Mound last August.

More about the "Inca cross."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chakana#/media/File:Tawa_chakana.svg

On a recent trip to Peru many of our museum guides pointed out an image in ancient artwork that they said was a reference to the "Southern Cross", meaning the 5 star Constellation. This was generally a diamond shape (sometimes with inward sloping sides,) or a 12 side figure resembling a large "+" sign.
You can one here: http://www.megalithic.co.uk/modules.php?op=modload&name=a312&file=index&do=showpic&pid=186720 on the left hand side.

If you take one quarter of the "Chakana" image, you get a sort of staircase with 3 steps. This is definitely an ancient symbol. Museo Nacional de Arqueología Antropología e Historia.
