I am doing some research for a television programme on the Merry Maidens and Boscawen-un stone circles in Cornwall. I am looking for anyone who has experienced a strange sensation in their legs (shaking or trembling) when standing in stone circles in the UK (doesn't have to be the ones in Corwall necessarily). If anyone has experienced these kinds of sensations or any other strange sensation I would be extremely interested in hearing from you with a view to taking part in the programme. My email address is; dkg@bigfoot.uk.com. Many thanks! Dominic

I can't say that I have Dominic, anywhere!

Last year alone I visited Boscawen-Un and the MM's five times with tour groups and not a single person mentioned anything like that at all.

May I ask why you have chosen those two circles in particular?

Cheers

Roy

I love visiting all things megalithic in all countries, but I can only report two "sensations": When I first visited Castlerigg Stone Circle in the Lake District years ago I felt clearly being held back from entering the circle itself. I did not enter the circle then but I revisited this place often and did so later - but always with a sense of being in a very, very special if not holy place.
I will always remember this first visit because it felt as if something had really struck me, like you read about in books but usually never experience
The only other place I "sense" something ist Maen Llia, the lonely menhir in the Brecon Beacons. This place makes me always feel "at home" and "invites" me, even if the landscape around is bleak and barren in winter. I never miss it when I am nearby.

Hi Solkaw
The only time I have experienced anything like this was at Kings Quoit burial chamber near Manorbier. I leaned on the capstone (it's quite a low chamber) and could have sworn that it pivoted under my weight. Also a newly charged set of batteries in my camera would not work when I tried to photograph it - but they did work when I tried them again later!

Not my legs usually, but I have to sit down in the circle as the world around seems to be spinning, particularly noticeable at the Rollright stones and Stannon stone circle near Roughtor in Cornwall.

Hi xseawitch,

Funny you should mention Stannon circle as I am researching it and it's neighbours Louden and Fernacre and am actually working at Louden at the moment.
I get absolutely no vibes whatsoever at Stannon and can only put it down to the overpowering close proximity to the china clay works. Louden and Fernacre, like all other circles I have visited on Bodmin moor and elsewhere I get my usual buzz out of. Odd isn't it!

There are a lot of sensations that are commonly felt at ancient sites.

Dominic, have you investigated the stones that can throw people off them?
There's one at Avebury which Maria Wheatley leads groups to visit http://www.theaveburyexperience.co.uk/index.html and one at Stanton Drew that I know of. http://www.megalithic.co.uk/modules.php?op=modload&name=a312&file=index&do=showpic&pid=20770

I was going to suggest you contact Chris and Kal at Hedgedruid, but you already have

Do keep us updated on the programme.

Hi, I grew up in a hamlet very close to Rough Tor so Stannon is my local circle, perhaps that makes a difference? I've been there in a howling gale but inside the circle there is only a breeze.

All in the perception of the visitor I suspect. Interesting discussion

Many thanks for that Rune! Most interesting. Unfortunately, we are only covering the Boscawen-un stones this time and it's for a Japanese documentary so sadly won't be viewable over here. I am going to suggest to them that they come over and do a more in depth documentary on a much wider scale though once this is done.

Chris was really helpful to me on this and suggested posting on this site ~ such a nice guy.

Again, many thanks.

Dominic

Hi Dominic
Why Boscawen-Un circle? Are you following up previous 'happenings' there? I only ask because it's a bit of a haul getting equipment there compared to the Maidens you previously mentioned isn't it?
Do you need any site plans, surveys or official reports or are you just winging it?

Cheers
Roy

Hi xseawitch,

I had to smile to myself when you mentioned how calm it was inside Stannon circle because when I first filmed there I had to stand outside of the circle to the south somewhat to get out of the wind and zoom in. My camcorder is one of those with a built-in microphone and even the slightest wind ruins any filming you do because of wind-rush!
The second time I was lucky as it was one of those rare days when it was actually virtually wind free so was able to film within the circle.
We've been trying to carry out a survey at Louden circle now across the way for over two weeks but the wind has been so strong that both the Plane Table and tape have been unusable

Lovely area to have on your doorstep though

Hi Roy,

We are following up on an article in a Japanese publication of a well known presenter that visited the site during filming for a documentary a number of years ago. She felt a really strange sensation in her legs that dissapeared as soon as she left the site. As it happened, I was coordinating that shoot and remember it clearly although never imagined that anything would come of it 4 years or so later. Quite bizarre.

It isn't that easy to get to or indeed find if I remember correctly. Do you have any site plans or surveys of Boscawen-un? That would be most useful!

Warm regards,

Dominic

Hi Dominic

Yes I have a copy of the full survey of Boscawen-Un published in March 2000.
It has it's full recorded history, excavations carried out there, old photographs, old reports, plans of the stones, drawings of the stones. In all it is a full archaeological assessment of the site and really interesting to read.
There are two ways of reaching the site and one doesn't involve parking in a slight pull-in alongside the main road!!

Cheers

Hi Roy,

That's fantastic. Is there any way I might be able to borrow this somehow or get a scanned copy from you (via email or other web based file transfer)?

I remember the last time I was there we had to park in a slight pull-in alongsode the main road ~ would love to avoid having to do this this time!

Look forward to hearing from you.

Warm regards,

Dominic

Literal translation of different languages leaves a lot to be desired but I've had a go at making a little more sense from the Google version pasted below, very kindly sent by our prolific contributor Aska. I've removed the programme details as Dominic's not revealed the company he's researching for. This is from a presenter's blog, the original is in Japanese.

My effort at making it sound like flowing English :-
Mysterious Experience in a Stone Circle

Dowsing is a method of sensing energy using L-shaped rods. People from the Water Companies also use this method to find pipes etc.
You grip the short end of the rods lightly, walk ahead whilst holding them, they will be parallel to each other. When you come to a place where the energy is, they will either move left or right or open. his rods rotated in opposite directions and [I'm guessing here] crossed in the centre of the circle. He'd dowsed a few times before but found these movements applied to any stone circle he tried.

[This bit is I feel very relevant to this thread as it confirms what xseawitch and others have said about experiencing inside of the circle being calm and warm when it's windy and cold outside it]

Inside the circle was warmer to the body and it was much less windy but outside the circle it was very windy and cold.
Maybe I'm compatible with stone circles.

[I think the other people in her group did not notice that, the sentence "Because staff seems did not feel at all what the "What?" would suggest that to me]

This is the original Google translation. excerpt)
The mysterious experience in the Stone Circle?
This time I've interviewed some of the stone circle. And I was the dowsing in each of Stone Circle. The dowsing, it is energy-sensing method using an L-shaped instrument. People of Waterworks is the so also or use when looking for water pipe (laughs). Shorter lightly grip, and walking with parallel, and come to the place where there is some sort of energy, you can move to the left or right you can open. If the dowsing in the interview the stone circle, I left and right is rotated in the opposite direction and come to an important point in the center. I also did a few times dowsing, but cases like this is the first time. And it was the same reaction in any Stone Circle. It is what energy of, I do not know what you mean, but it was a very strange experience. At the same, but this is such that I feel, is warm is to go and body in the center of the circle, but is quite the wind is strong was cold, it was enough to not feel the cold. Because staff seems did not feel at all what the "What?", I guess might have Stone Circle and compatibility is good (laughs).

Once again, thanks to Aska for finding this

My tweaking of the Google translation is very poor, this is Aska's of a different question in the same interview which is a million times better than mine :-

Interviewer:What was the mysterious experience in the Stone Circle?

Question: Where only woman can not stand, losing her power?

I saw a long time ago in the "world strange discovery!" TV programme, there was a place (ruin?) in the United Kingdom where only woman couldn't stand by missing her power.

I remember that I thought it strange that when the female TV reporter called the Mystery Hunter just went to that place, she collapsed down exhaustedly, but the male coordinator who have accompanied her showed any strange reaction.

Please someone let me know the place name of the location.

Answer : The island St Michael's Mount in Cornwall (the road to the island in the sea appears when the tide is on the ebb), there is a Stone Circle "Nine Meadows[sic]".
The stomach gets warm comfortably when you are in the circle.

Then she visited the oldest stone circle "Bosco Wen-en" and she suffered an accident in front of a stone. The female Mystery Hunter's knees trembled and she couldn't walk ....

They said that a strong power which only affect to women ran in that stone, and this kind of earth energy crosses the United Kingdom from here in a straight line. (← it is called Ley line)
