I am aiming to put together a few days touring routes in Northumberland taking in roman and pre-roman sites with interesting history as well as photogenic locations. We will also include medieval castles and interesting churches, especially 11th century and older, and probably the usual tourist locations. Most likely star point will be Alnwick, and we may spend one day doing Hadrians wall and surrounds, staying perhaps in Carlisle or the northern lakes, and then back via the north pennines. I am interested in particular recommendations of sites. I will be travelling with two "senior" american ladies, so we wont want to stray too far from the road, but up to half a mile on a defined footpath is fine.
