hello,
checking out your site for a recent visit to castle rising {nr kings lynn norfolk} I did'nt find any info about a mound tumulus in the nearby woods. I could tell you the name of the woods and os ref but, this morning our two dogs ate the map! and the day degenerated from that point...ha ha ha...must be something happening in the heavens!!!
I am really interested in any unknown sites around the norfolk suffolk areas, and believe we are not just a flat and uninteresting county/ies.
My dad discovered some information about a druid stone circle in gorleston on sea, the locals apparently made a sea wall or pier out of it...
if anyone is interested i will try and find the papers.
Well enough for now, any feedback much appreciated.

Hello Sue and welcome,
A quick Google search for Castle Rising gives the grid reference as TF666246. Popping this into the new improved (1:25000) http://www.get-a-map.co.uk shows up the tumulus.
Another good place to look is the Magic Map. http://www.magic.gov.uk
Fiddly to use, you to select the rural features (statutory) dataset.
This throws up the following:
21330 MOTTE CASTLE IN KEEPER'S WOOD, 670M EAST OF CASTLE RISING CASTLE http://www.magic.gov.uk/rsm/21330.pdf
Not in our time period, but also:
21332 BOWL BARROW AND ADJACENT SECTION OF BOUNDARY BANK AND DITCH 700M SOUTH OF MILL HOUSE http://www.magic.gov.uk/rsm/21332.pdf
21331 BOWL BARROW AND ASSOCIATED MOUND IN OLD FEN, 450M SOUTH EAST OF MILL HOUSE http://www.magic.gov.uk/rsm/21331.pdf
Should give you some more information. How about visiting them and taking a photos for us.

Gorleston is now where near Castle Rising, but Murray refers to the 10ft stones in a circle, destroyed he says in 1768. I made a mistake spelling it Gorlestone and now can't find the record. Checked in Pastscape, biab, antiquity, and nothing with either spelling. Murray is in Colchester public library, and presumably elsewhere but not yet checked worldcat.
