Hi,
I have noticed that there are several Megalithic sites around the Hampshire/Dorset borders.

Just wondering if anyone can tell me which (if any) is the best/most interesting/beautiful/magical to go to, as I am planning on spending the weekend down in the Bournemouth area and always like to visit these special places.

Many Regards
Mark

For sheer scale and grandeur, you'll be hard pushed to better Maiden Castle. It's the largest hill fort in Britain and is very impressive.

Not far from Maiden Castle are the Nine Stones at Winterborne Abbas, they are charming. Further N you have the Dorset Cursus and it's worthwhile checking out the area at its N end, the huge Bronze Age defences of the Bokerley/Grim's Ditches and the great Long Barrows, Knap and Grans. There is much to see, it depends on how much time you have

If you were wanting more east Dorset, I strongly suggest Knowlton Henge, and the area - lots to see. Spend some time here, walk around the earthworks a few times, notice the barrows - maybe try to print out an aerial picture of the fields around there, and take it with you. A worthwhile visit.

Cheers

Tim

Close to Bournemouth? Head for the things just north of Wimborne Minster: the Dorset Cursus, various barrows and Badbury Rings. Maiden castle is fine, but not that close to Bmouth (and will be a bit bleak this time of year). A bit further north is Hambledon Hill, not quite as massive as maiden castle, but still pretty awe inspiring.

I think my favourites for near Bournemouth would be Knowlton and surrounding area, or perhaps a bit more for the enthusiast, but a site wit a special atmosphere at times, go south across the Studland ferry to the Rempstone circle, and have a good look around in the woods there.
