Britain is full of quirky festivals. Some are steeped in tradition, having been celebrated in forgotten corners of the land for centuries. Others are more recent additions to the calendar. Most, however, are barmy, family-friendly events that cement the image of Britain as a nation of proud eccentrics. Here are some of the best.



Dunmow Flitch Trials, Great Dunmow, Essex



Mid-July



Every four years, married couples from all over the world compete to convince a panel of judges that, now that they are hitched, they have neither "transgressed" nor had a brawl, nor offended each other in deed or word in twelve months. Couples deemed successful win a hunk of bacon and, during a procession, are carried on the shoulders of men throughout the village.
