This site may provide good evidence of a much earlier human occupation of north america than that hitherto accepted:-
http://phys.org/news/2012-09-topper-site-middle-comet-controversy.html
The excellent http://www.phys.org site finds some amazing stuff - the interpretation of the Topper site may cause a fundamental re-appraisal of the human story in this part of the world
It seems a comet exploding over Canada 12900 years ago may have caused the extinction of the Clovis people and the megafauna they were associated with.

See the Portal's site listing for Topper:
http://www.megalithic.co.uk/article.php?sid=16109
The theory that the Younger-Dryas cooling event was caused by a comet (or series of comets) is starting to had a long and twisted history - which can be followed here at the portal.
In rough order:
Diamonds tell tale of comet that killed off the cavemen, May 2007.
Also see phys.org - Six North American sites hold 12,900-year-old nanodiamond-rich soil, Jan 2009.
Murray Springs - What Brought About The Demise Of Clovis Hunters And Their Prey?, April 2010.
and
Ancient Americans took cold snap in their stride, April 2010.
Also see phys.org- No evidence for ancient comet or Clovis catastrophe, archaeologists say
, Sept 2010.
Comet Theory comes crashing to Earth, May 2011.
So the saga continues.

The Allendale Paleoamerican Expedition returned to the Topper Site during the summer, the dig used volunteers - details can be found at:-
http://allendale-expedition.net/
Also, here is a link to many pics of finds from Topper including some nice pre-Clovis tools::-

It seem to me that the evidence for the exploding comet theory is quite strong, on balance.
