Hello. I hoping someone can help. This weekend a friend & I found some caves in the woods on the hills near to Coldrum longbarrow (I think this wooded area may be called White Horse woods?) in Kent. A friend of mine believes these maybe neolithic caves and there is a worn painting/image on the back wall. Does anyone know more about these caves? There is nothing on the internet that I have been able to find.
Thanks

Hi Dryad and welcome,
That sounds very unusual indeed and intriguing.
Do you have any photographs of this artwork/painting, please? We'd be better able to advise if we could see what you've seen.

Hi Rune, thank you for your response. I am having trouble working out how to post image attachments on here. I will post back when I have worked it out.
Many thanks

Hi Rune, thank you for your response. I have attached (hopefully) some pictures for you. Picture 5 is the only image we have of the painting. It is quite dark though. It looks like it was done in some kind of red/orange colour. When you look at these pictures the caves look small but they are in fact quite a bit larger than they look and you can crawl quite easily into both. I am planning to go back and get better pictures taken. We are surprised that there seems to be no knowledge or information on these caves anywhere. They were quite hard to find but well worth the journey.
Many thanks

Hi Dryad, here's a how-to - purloined from David Morgan's advice to another poster as I didn't know either!
What you have to do is right mouse click on your picture in flickr or webshots or wherever it is, and then copy the "view image info" text and then click on the blue "IMAGE" button below this entry box and paste it there.
hope this helps,
Rune

I make that TQ654617. The advanced search for Exploring Kent's Past is here
http://www.kent.gov.uk/ExploringKentsPast/advancedsearch.aspx
I couldn't see anything relevant on a search for within 2km of this location
However I found something here
http://badgellswoodcamping.co.uk/things-to-do/
"... see if you can find Flittermouse Hole (the old name for a bat cave!) or the 400year old beech tree.
Badgells Wood is part of 250acre Whitehorse Wood which you can explore via the footpaths. "
The experts on the cave would be the Wealden Cave & Mine Society
http://www.wcms.org.uk/index.shtml
The black splodges on the walls look like soot from recent-ish candles but it's entirely possible there could be cave art down there that no one has noticed - probably in the form of faint scratches - as we heard from John Charlesworth at our event in July.

Hi Andy B,
Many grateful thanks for your help with the pictures and for supplying us with further links to this area of Kent.
The caves in White Horse Wood/Badgells Wood do appear to be those described as Flittermouse Hole. There is indeed cave art down there, most of it modern names carved into the chalk or written in pencil, however, there is a painting of some kind of horned mythical figure, roughly 4' high. Sadly most of this painting has been destroyed and all that remains is the right leg, left arm and the top of its head. Upon the next visit we will endeavour to take some better pictures. We will of course post further information on the caves history if it can be found.
Thanks

The Kent Underground Research Group might have some information as well.

Thanks for all your help everyone. Incidentally the images you can see on the walls are of a distinct ochre type colour. They look black in the photo but in reality are a rusty red. I will get some better pictures soon.
