Theme 2012: World Heritage - The 40th anniversary of the World Heritage Convention:
Recognising challenges for the future

In 1982, in response to a proposal by ICOMOS, UNESCO designated 18 April as the ‘International Day for
Monuments and Sites’. Each year a theme is selected to help focus the celebration and promotion of
cultural heritage across the world. The aim is to explore cultural heritage and encourage local communities
and individuals to consider its importance to their lives, identities and communities. The theme selected for
2012 is World Heritage in celebration of the 40th Anniversary of the World Heritage Convention.
