Keep an eye on the sky, and you might see auroras tonight! Early today the Sun let loose two powerful X-class flares that could soon rock Earth’s magnetic field.
See Sky and Telescope.

Wow, that video of it is amazing. Already daylight here (and I'm probably too far south anyway). Thanks for the newsflash, though, bat400.

I've been using this service for quite a while. They email you if there's a possibility of a sighting and you can choose the level of alerts you want. Not seen any so far but always hopeful.

If it's clear, its worth trying again tonight, but a full moon will be an added detriment.

Red alert received from Aurorawatch http://aurorawatch.lancs.ac.uk/alerts which means the aurora could be visible tonight from all parts of the UK.
One thing I've noticed in some comments on photographs of the aurora is that the sky can look only faintly tinged or slightly lighter than usual in a small area to a casual observer, but if they photograph it then the colours are vivid on the image.

No "northern light" here in Indiana last night, but Jupiter is dancing with Venus in the early evening.

Still the alerts keep coming, a red alert yesterday - pea soup fog here, and tonight there's an amber alert but the sky isn't very clear.
Patience is a virtue.

Oooh, that's beautiful, *thank-you* pab!
One day I'll see them I'm sure, but not from that perspective!

I've been lucky enough to have seen two displays, both from the UK. One was from my backgarden in kent and was a deep blood red in colour and the other was whilst I was on a ghost tour in the middle of a graveyard in Edinburgh and was a lovely pink.
I had a phone call from a friend in Norway alerting me to the first one and the other one I saw by sheer luck.
So keep looking. You might catch a display yet. Or go to Ullapool. I have a friend who lives there and he's seen hundreds of displays.
Good luck.
