^^^^ and now Sunday 29th July as well ^^^
I'm very pleased to announce our Megalithic Portal summer get-together. We will be returning to Derbyshire where Peak District archaeologist and stone circle / ring cairn expert John Barnatt has kindly agreed to join us and lead a guided walk.
Also involved are Tim Prevett from History and Mystery Tours, Neolithic axe expert Guy Stephenson and myself, and many more to be confirmed.
Other guided walks are being planned as well as talks and refreshments in a village hall close to some ancient sites between Matlock and Bakewell.
So this is also a 'call for papers' - as they say in academic circles - although you don't have to be academic to share knowledge with us.
If you would like to lead a guided walk or give a talk on any subject we cover on the Megalithic Portal, from Holy Wells right back to Palaeolithic times then please get in touch with your proposal. We will have a digital projector available for presentations.
All this on Sat 28th July and possibly on Sunday 29th as well. This is a free event although we may have to give preference to society members for some activities as places are limited.
I hope you can join us if you are within travelling distance but I know this is a busy weekend of the summer, so if you can't make it we are also planning something in the Bristol area in the next few months.
More details on all this soon.
Cheers
Andy B

Hi Andy
Will try to make this one. My younger son lives in Derby and I usually go up to stay at least once a year, and always take at least one day out to travel up to this area and visit Arbor Low. (If you haven't been to this area, folks, you will like it, I'm sure.)
Assume you'll go to Arbor Low?
Bakewell is a nice town, and the Bakewell book shop has some interesting titles for stoney people. Then there's the famous Bakewell Pudding......!
If you have a motorbike [David M!] you'll probably know Matlock Bath ... esp.on a Sunday?

Yes I should think so Angie although Stanton Moor will feature prominently as well. Might you be around on the Sunday?
More good news is that Erin Robinson from the Heather and Hillforts Project will be joining us to give a talk http://www.heatherandhillforts.co.uk. Keep the ideas coming in.

Hi Andy
Not sure of anything yet. I just will try to make it both days IF I am in Derby at the time. Until I know what my son is doing.. (ie: he is planning two weeks in Devon & Cornwall during the twins' school summer hols).. I'm afraid I won't know.

Sounds enticing Andy - thanks for giving us advance notice of the date, which makes it much easier to try and plan...retirement isn't the leisure it was cracked up to be!
One pet issue I'd like to offer for the agenda...cup marks. I really do wonder about some posted as such, when many look like the place where a pebble has fallen out of a large chunk of stone and left a depression before erosion has gently smoothed things down.
This is definitely NOT a dig at any contributors - just a possible starting position for what could be an interesting & lively discussion! If we manage to get up there, I would be happy to show a few pics of potential candidates for 'cup mark' status which I think are entirely natural.
Some portal members might not want to actually lead a session, but could be happy to show a few examples & ask the audience to say what they think caused the 'depression'.
Posted on Portal Forum to initiate discussion...or perhaps it's just me!?

PAB, maybe you would need to start with looking at good examples of cupmarks which considered to be definetly man made, and look at cup-like-marks which are definitely natural before looking at the more ambiguous examples which might be either.

Hamish..yes, I am sure you're right - but part of me might want to put up some which look obviously man-made, but which are really natural!
Have you got any examples of potentially 'debatable' cupmarks?

I agree with Hamish. Start looking, you have plenty of time now you have been retired - or was that superannuated?

I usually err on the side of caution, if I can't decide whether it is or it is not I don't normally bother recording them. I'm sure I have some photos somewhere of UK cupmarks which might or might not be.
I don't have any easily recognisable rock art here in oxfordshire.
what makes a circular depression in a rock a simple cupmark?, are cupmarks always circular or do you get ovals and egg shapes too?

Yes please! After all the interest last year I was hoping you might step forward (or everyone else stepped back )
A walk will be good too, we'll work out the details. I wonder if we could spread over to Sunday on the Stanton Moor stuff - what do you think?

I only have 1 chert artifact from Arizona. My passion is Danish flint. But then where does chert end and flint begin. In fact what exactly is flint? I can feel some reading coming on . . .

I have some logistical difficulties to overcome, but I'd love to make one of these meetings at some point. If not Derby, then you mentioned Bristol Andy?

The July event is going to be based in Birchover so as to be walking distance from Stanton Moor. It's only a tiny hall so I don't think we'll get everyone in at the same time but the plan is to have several things going on at the same time and the hall will be a base to meet and go off on guided walks and other such activities in the local area.
We should have food and stall(s) as well and will appreciate help with all sorts of things, see further up this thread.

I have booked the little hall for Sunday 29th as well, most of us are planning on staying if you would like to join in on the Sunday. So there is still space for people to speak, lead others on a guided walk or help organise another activity, let us know your ideas.
