On 22 December 2011 I made my usual visit to Stanton Drew for the winter solstice at sunset. There was me, my friend and a group of three guys... that was it.

It always amazes me how few people visit our great henges and circles for the winter solstice, despite all the evidence pointing to this being the most important connection. How come thousands go to Stonehenge in the summer when it’s so obvious that they should be there in the winter?

Stanton Drew has a lovely alignment through the great circle and the south west circle to the setting sun at the winter solstice, which was at 16.04 this year. Despite the cloud and rain it is still a wonderful place to be and experience the link with nature that the ancients felt.

The group of three had left by then… they’d obviously looked up sunset for the London meridian and not the one at Stanton Drew!

See you next year.

Since there are two solstices that could create alignments (is there one at Stanton Drew?), does it really matter?

Admittedly, being local to it, Stonehenge is getting a bit stale for me (familiarity breads contempt?). If I could afford it, I think I'd like to do more Mayan equinoxes. Those guys were very much into the sun.
