The EngLaId (‘English Landscape and Identities’) project analyses change and continuity in the English landscape from the middle Bronze Age (c. 1500 BC) to the Domesday survey (c. 1086 AD).

Based at the University Oxford, the project started in October 2011 and will continue for 5 years. The project will analyse patterns on a national scale – based mainly on NMP, HER and PAS data – with the aim to identify broad patterns in land use and metalwork deposition.

Second, the project’s researchers will focus on a number of case studies, initially selected on basis of NMP coverage in combination with other investigation types, although the boundaries of case study areas can be altered if HER officers feel that that will be more beneficial.

This is the first time that landscape and archaeological features, together with finds, will be analysed on such a comprehensive scale over such an extended time period. It provides an excellent opportunity to understand the development of the English landscape and the identities of the people who inhabited it from a long-term perspective.

The output of the project, in addition to traditional scholarly publications will be a website that, through application of new technology derived from the Semantic Web. [Warning - buzz word scepticism alarms sounding - I hope to find out more about this - MegP Ed] This will provide a search function that links to existing on-line data repositories.
