Could the Cursus/Henges have been created for hunting/animal farming purposes?
Once an animal gets inside the compound,it would be very easy for hunters to flush the animal to the large ditches that were dug on the inside, then the animal would be guided further along the ditch to an area that would have been too steep for the animal to escape and then killed!
Hunters could easily patrol the tops of the banks looking for animals that made their way inside.
Just a thought...

It reminds me of Julius Caesar's battle against Vercingetorix when 2 walls of 18 and 21 km were built with 4m deep ditches. Cavalry units were able to manoeuver between the parallel walls to boost defences. That site is not definitely known after 2000 years so evidence of wood posts from the Cursus of 5000 years may have gone.
The Lesser Cursus was incomplete- is it possible they were nearly finished when the enemy turned up too early?

some of these structures have been used as animal traps too. example found right here at meg prtl
