Are you a Tolkien nut like me? Do you see Middle-earth in the landscape when you travel? Can you identify with photographs you see on the Portal and get that thrill of recognition that says - Tolkien?

Depending on intitial interest shown by yourselves - I'm exploring the possibility of compiling a temporary Middle-earth Gallery from our photographs - new and old.

For example:
The recent landscape photo of Skye by swatson is a dead certainty for The Misty Mountains

Waylandheim by Wayland has to be in Rohan and his Hodges Close flooded slate quarry holds the Elven Door that leads to the Mines of Moria.

I know just where the Three Farthing Stone is, but do you have thoughts on locations for the Barrow Downs, Fangorn, Mirkwood or the Falls of Rauros?

Is anyone interested? If not I'll shut up - if you are, then we can develope the idea.

That sounds like fun!

I have plenty of interesting stuff for a project like that.

Just to be a little bit picky.

Well of course you can see Middle-Earth in our landscape, where do you think JRR got his ideas from? The man loved Britain, it'd countryside and its history (he was a professor of Anglo-Saxon studies after all).

The section of LotR on the Reaving of the Shire was his diatribe against the industrialisation of Britain and the ruin of the landscape and our heritage.

But good luck with the project.

Sounds good to me too, having just read "The Real Middle Earth" by Brian Bates. Great comparisons.

OK I'll start the ball rolling. Andy - is it possible to copy photos so that the originals stay with their proper site entries and the copies then go into a Middle-earh Gallery. If not, I could retain all home site information and relocate to Middle-earth on a temporary basis and then send them back home to their main site when we have grown tired of Tolkien

The only way to copy would be to re-submit the photo a second time, so probably easiest to move and leave the original location as a text note so we can put them back again.

They will still link to and from the main site pages no matter where they are in the gallery so people will still find them.

I've moved Spirit of Place to the top level as requested. The move worked fine but we had the old thumbnail size problem so I had to update to 120 by hand. All done and nice front page image selected from Baz.

Cheers
Andy

Surely you could just hyperlink to the original picture. That way you preserve the overall site and keep the workload down?
