Monday 17 October
The Electric Theatre 8.30pm £8
In his latest book archaeologist and historian Neil Oliver embarks on a landmark exploration of how our land and its people came to be. It is a journey into an ancient world, through time as well as landscape, with these two dimensions providing material for a travelogue, encouraging us to look at and see our old familiar landscapes in different ways.
Neil Oliver, instantly recognised by his distinctive voice and long black hair, is the charismatic presenter of the award-winning documentary series Coast. His 10-part History of Scotland on BBC2 was a critical success as was the book of the same name that accompanied it. A History of Ancient Britain will tie into an eight-part BBC series.

Are you going to go and cover this talk for the Megalithic Portal, Andy? It would be a good coup to get a personal interview with Neil.
(If you click on 'previous picture' above that one, you'll see one of the old gal with him.)
I actually had to miss the 4th prog tonight (though I'd seen the series before) as I was due to catch up with the grandchildren. That's true love, eh? - for the kids, I mean...

Sunny... the Summer Solstice in 2010 was one of the best I've been to, though 2001 was pretty good as well.
Bumping into Neil Oliver was pretty much the icing on the cake, and the dawn chill and tiredness after being up all night just evaporated. (You'd be pretty unusual not to get a buzz at SH Solstice anyway.)
Sometimes wish I'd made the effort to have a conversation - esp to hear him say 'Worrrrld' [I do love the Scots accent] - but it was obvious they'd stepped back from the monument to have a welcome break, so was just grateful for a few brief minutes of his time.
It's nice now to watch the re-run of 'History of Ancient Britain Part 3', and think that only a few minutes after he'd done the presentation in SH circle, I was having an unexpected hug from him!
Be interesting to hear if any other members had a chat with Neil that morning. Surely I couldn't have been the only one!!!

It's probably too short notice to arrange an interview. I see he's also doing a book signing in Oxford on Monday lunchtime so it's going to be a short visit!

Could you just go along and do a report on his talk, Andy?
Maybe you could then go and introduce yourself, and tell him about the Megalithic Portal and ask if he has a couple of books to donate to a competition to advertise it?
It'd be cheap advertising for him and his publishers...
Oh - and maybe get yourself photographed with him?
Some interesting background. I've been searching for the "crushingly cruel parody of him on BBC Scotland’s comedy sketch show, Only An Excuse." without success but he seems to have spawned some rather fun amateur efforts
Don't play both at the same time if you value your sanity!
