On October 8th Earth is going to plow through a stream of dust from Comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner, and the result could be an outburst of Draconid meteors.

"We're predicting as many as 750 meteors per hour," says Bill Cooke of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office. "The timing of the shower favors observers in the Middle East, north Africa and parts of Europe."

Thanks Coldrum, I'm fortunate enough to live somwhere with little light pollution so will nip in and out of the garden to see if there are any good displays.

If it's a clear night, imagine sitting in a stone circle watching the meteor shower. If anyone's planning to do that, please do a write-up for us, hope you can also get some good photographs.

Fingers crossed for a clear night!

If it's clear I'll have a look but the light pollution in Cardiff is very bad.

There's a bit more information here:

Weather forecast seems to say that the whole of the UK will be cloud covered!

I hate to say this but it's been the case for me for the last few years. Leonids especially, every November I dash in and out hoping for a break in the clouds and occasionally I'll catch a glimpse of maybe one or two but they are here and gone so quickly it's hard to tell if it's them or just wishful thinking.

There' s always the Orionids around about the 21st/22nd of October.

The best showers I've watched have been the Perseids and the Geminids. Not in Cardiff though.

Unfortunately, cloudy up here in north-west England so can't see anything dropping out of the sky, apart from persistant rain !
