Hello,
I'd like to improve the forum avatars a bit so you are very welcome to find or make your own little ID image (avatar) to show next to your name in the forum.
We don't have a way to upload them yourself at the moment but I will add them all if you can email yours to me or post a link to the image in this thread using the 'IMAGE' button below.
If it's not already on the web somewhere then email it to me at andy@megalithic.co.uk with the Subject of Forum Avatar so I don't miss it.
Avatar images should be around 80 x 80 pixels but I'll resize it if necessary and add it as soon as I can,
If you find a nice source of nice looking avatars we can reuse for other people then please post that as well. A web search for 'forum avatar' or just avatar should find loads to try.
If you want to keep your current one that's fine of course, no need to do anything.
Cheers

Good point, any image format is fine for these. JPG or GIF will be fine or PNG for that matter. I'll tweak it if not. (For beginners: GIF good for simple graphics, JPG for photo realistic images, PNG for either.) For the sake of our sanity no animated GIFs please.

I have at last got some personal avaters sorted out, thanks to everyone who has sent them so far.

If you are one of the people above, go to
http://www.megalithic.co.uk/user.php?op=edituser
Look for the section Your Avatar and click on the Drop Down menu. At the bottom you will find your avatar listed so select it and then click at the bottom of the page to Save Changes.
(note that we don't currently have a way to stop other people choosing and using your avatar by accident but if they do just let me know and we'll sort it out)
If you would like to create your own personal avatar (or find one from one of the many online images available) please attach it to an email and send to andy@megalithic.co.uk

Thank you, but I have changed my mind about using an owl.
I don't want to give the false impression that I am wise...
Anyone who[o] would like to use my owl, please do.

OK Wendy, I'll make the owl into a general avatar. I'm looking for some properly free / creative commons avatars I can put on the site for people to use. I'd better make a note where I get them from.
Some good historic images from old books here. See the left menu for the full list.
Could be cropped and coloured in

Medieval art from various woodcuts
http://www.godecookery.com/clipart/clart.htm
I'm not totally clear on whether we can use these but they all appear to be from historic artworks

Well there you are, my new avatar. Yes, it tiny but its better than the last one I had. Its me aged 12 to 13 standing at the Roman site of Old Sarum. I am wearing my tank top and what we used to call 'two tone trousers'. Notice also my typical basin haircut which most kids seemed to have in the early 1970s. Thanks to Andy for sorting things out for me.

Thanks Runemage. I was on a happy holiday that year. I didn't really have a great interest in prehistoric sites, but my brother was mad on the Romans - so we had to go looking at all the Roman ruins and museams. He's still an expert on all things Roman. Glad you like the avatar, thanks.

Sunny,
Old Sarum is a great place, we go each year and watch a sunrise and sometimes a sunset from the top, the view is tremendous... ps love the tank top

I'm back from the Delta Quadrant, Andy, having exhausted all opportunities for remaining a layabout on Pemular VII. "Go to Terra at once and make pseudo-scientific assertions claiming ancient astronauts visited there and helped Terrans get books published," I was told. "But that's already been done," I replied; to which came the rejoinder: "Well, just go there and ... do something!"
So here I am, posting to the message board. I'd very much like to obtain one of those custom avatars you've discussed. Dimensions-wise, though, I'm confused: The avatar I now have is a mere 30-something pixels in width, you mentioned 45 pixels, some avatars in use are 75 pixels across, etc.
There's the one I'd like. It's 100 pixels in width, presently; and it's a Portable Network Graphics file. Please change its dimensions to whatever they ought to be. Thank you very much!

OK, I'll do that shortly. I have a couple of others waiting to do as well so if anyone else wants a custom avatar please post it here or email it over and I'll add it to the to do list.
