Forgive me for not going through the preliminaries of introduction, seeing as i am a new member and all,but i have held on to this to long and wish to share it with those of like mind and interest.
At alot of the megalithic sites of britain we find a ring and ditch, as if some giant foot print had been imagined in the landscape by our ancestors.
The intial construction of stone henge consisted of 80 to 82 blue stones arranged in two concentric circles with a pie shaped segment just like a piece of cake with a slice missing. this is the exact shape left by the imprint of an unshod horses hoof, the pie or triangular shape within the two concentric rings representing the frog of a hoof. the next phase of construction what we see today would appear to be a reinvention of the same concept, this time being a symbolic representation of the hoof itself not just the imprint.
Alot has been said regarding the meaning or use behind the stone monuments of Britain not least stonehenge. Some theories being worship of the ancestors to a temple dedicated to a god or gods.
For me stonehenge is both. I feel it is important to understand a little of the esoterics or mysticism with regards to a place of worship in this case stonehenge.
A temple by its very nature is dedicated to god or a god, who exists on an unseen plane of existence to our own, generally termed the inner world. In this inner world there are an inumerable amount of innerplane beings some disincarnate beings of the earth plane others highly evolved souls who help and guide humanity, with each God having his or her host of these helpers.
The devotee/s on the earth plane dedicate sites to their respective Deity whom they invoke with prayer and offerings. The diety and innerplane helpers then use the stone or stones of the site as a place to polarise there soul bodies to send blessings to the devotees or answer their prayers. i have no doubt stonehenge and many other such sites were places where this was happening, but there also seems to be another significant role played by stonehenge.
A recent archeological theory regarding stone henge was that people were bringing the cremated remains of their relatives to place into the nearby river on the winter solstice.
Astrologically this is when the sun is aligned due west in its apparent yearly path round the heavens, the solstice being when he starts his northern journey. Metaphysically this time is seen as being auspicious for achieving liberation from earthly bondage, the sun and his alignment seen as being a portal to the western portion of the inner worlds. a door if you like where entry can be made into the realm of the god of the west.
We know that in that region of Britian the tribes there worshipped the god or goddess Epona holding the literal conotation of a Horse god, although there might be another candidate.
In Irish manuscripts we come across a diety named the Daghda, who is described as wearing horse hide leggings, although he makes some comments that suggest he might in fact have horses legs, a common trait of many gods to have animal as well as human characteristics.
Preceding a battle with the Fomorians, Daghda states that during the battle the Fomorians will fall "like hail stones under a horses hoof," later in the conversation which he is having with the goddess Mabh (i think it is Mabh cant quite remember right now, you can find the tale in the Second battle of Magh Tuired at sacredtexts.com), he says that "the imprint of my heel will be left on every stone for ever more".
The hailstone i interpret as being the stars as they set in the west the directional home of the Daghda by way of this proxy. If you read the tales you will find out for yourself that what is beng described in the stories is highly allegorical rather than historical. For these tales are presented within an historical context although it is plain to see through the numerology amongst other things that the stories are mainly astrological with gems of morality and mysticism scattered throughout.
We also know that in contemporary folk lore stonehenge was known as the giants dance, if you accept like me that the structure is a symbolic horses hoof then maybe our ancestors left the imprint of Epona or the god of the west for ever more.

Hi Hazelnut
Welcome to MP.
I'm not sure if the Mods would agree with this post being in the stones forum and you may find it being moved to the mysteries forum. In an attempt to keep it here though, has anyone got any firm dating for the domestication of the horse in the UK?

Probably the Bronze Age or later, up until then they were hunted for food. Anyway, long after the "horseshoe" at Stonehenge was built (2600 - 2400 BCE).
