As the new(ish) co-owner of the house at Menhir du Cloitre, Huelgoat, Brittany, may I clear up any uncertainties about access to the menhir.

Far from denying access, we are delighted to have people come and visit the stone provided they do so in daylight hours and respect the fact that it is in a private garden.

We even hope to create a small information centre for Brittany megaliths (suggestions and contributions welcomed).

*Thank-you* that's lovely news.

Our site page is here, http://www.megalithic.co.uk/article.php?sid=8849#37137 I was going to link it to your post, but by the time I'd found it you'd beaten me to it Excellent, now all the info is where everyone can find it. It must be wonderful to have your own stone so close to home, especially one that size, you're certainly on the spot for lots of observations.

Good luck with your information centre project.

Rune

Phil-the-menhir,
Bonsoir,
My daughter lives near morlaix, and runs a shop, petit magazine Anglais.
I visit quite often, I will pop in to see in my own odd ball(dowsing) way your menhir.
Auvoir.

Ah!! I found a reference to your stone in a French book and spent hours looking for it. I eventually saw it through your garden gateway as I drove past. (probably for the 5th time heehee) I saw a group sitting outside and didn't wish to disturb their peaceful afternoon with my tripod and friend hehe, and now I have pleasure to find and read your post. Huelgoat is such a beautiful area, I will probably be back for a third visit in the next year.
Best wishes and congratulations on hosting such a wonderful menhir.

We look forward to meeting you.

There is much dispute over the location and identity of these Brittany standing stones. The Le Cloitre (St Guinec?) menhir (the one in our garden) is often confused with the nearby Coatmocun menhir, the site of which is not certain.

Like you, I have discovered a menhir less than two kilometers from Le Cloitre on the left side of the D764, heading towards Morlaix. However whether this is the Coatmocun menhir remains uncertain. The stone is difficult to reach - indeed a private property sign exists - and is almost certainly less than 8 metres in height (it appears smaller than the Le Cloitre menhir which has been recently measured at 6.1 metres).

Plans to gather and display more information at Le Cloitre about local megaliths, archaeology etc, continue. Any information or help with this project would be much appreciated.
