I have added GPX format data download, which should work with a wide range of modern GPSes and Smartphones. There are also KML for Google Earth and CSV formats suitable for Garmin and Navman and for further analysis in Excel / OpenOffice.

For other formats you can feed the KML or GPX into online conversion tools such as GPS Visualizer to convert to (eg) OV2 for TomTom or whatever other file format you would like.

I have successfully used POI Editor to do this for TomTom data.

You can also add a little 22x22 bitmap .BMP if you don't want a red square as an icon. This needs to have the same name as the .ov2 file.
eg MegP_England.ov2 and MegP_England.bmp

You are welcome to save this image to use:

The main download links are here (CSV)
http://www.megalithic.co.uk/topics.php?countries=1&kmldown=1

or use Search / Browse to find the Country / County / Site Type etc that you want and use the link in the right hand menu
http://www.megalithic.co.uk/search.php?query=&country=1

Downloads are limited to a maximum of 50 sites, but you can unlock unlimited downloads by signing up as a Contributory Member.

To make things easier for owners of TomTom satnavs I have created a .zip file of everything you need to upload POI files of ancient sites in England and Wales to your satnav.

The download is here:
http://www.megalithic.co.uk/download.php?&op=viewdownloaddetails&lid=157

Here is a copy of the Readme.txt that is included so you can see what you are downloading:

POI files for thousands of ancient sites in England and Wales, sourced from The Megalithic Portal
http://www.megalithic.co.uk

This zip file contains the following files:

MegP_England.ov2 (TomTom POI file)
MegP_England.bmp (Icon)
MegP_Wales.ov2 (TomTom POI file)
MegP_Wales.bmp (Icon)

To install, connect your TomTom satnav to your PC (you may need to install Microsoft ActiveSync first) or plug in an MMC memory card via a USB reader to transfer the files to your satnav.

Copy the four files above to the map directory (on mine this is \SDMMC\GB_plus_major_roads_of_WE)
Safely disconnect the satnav or MMC card.

When you restart your satnav you should see some new POI files that should be enabled:
MegP_England
MegP_Wales

These will have the icon of a stone circle. Note that for simplicity all the types of ancient site have a stone circle icon! Each listing has the name of the site, followed by the type of site followed by some short codes with more information.

eg. Reigate Common Barrow Cemetary Acr3 Cnd2 Amb4 Acc4 N

Acr = Accuracy of the point
5 - Coordinates taken from GPS or official recorded position
4 - Coordinates scaled from a detailed map
3 - Coordinates scaled from a bad map
2 - Coordinates of the nearest village
1 - Coordinates of the nearest town
NOTE: If the Acr is a 3, 2 or a 1, the POI may be nowhere near where the site is. If you manage to find it by further research or by asking a local person we would appreciate you feeding back the accurate coordinates to us by leaving a post on the Megalithic Portal page for the site.

Cnd = Condition of the site
5 - Perfect
4 - Almost Perfect
3 - Reasonable but with some damage - e.g stone circle with half the stones missing
2 - ruined but still recognisable as an ancient site eg ploughed barrow or stone circle with only one stone
1 - sites that destroyed on the ground but visible as soil / crop marks
-1 completely destroyed, no traces left at all

Amb = Subjective Ambience of the site
5 - is absolutely fantastic, down to
1 - awful

Access = How difficult is the Access
5 - Can be driven to. Full access for the disabled / sites such as barrows that can be seen from the road and are best viewed from a distance anyway.
4 - Accessed by a short walk on a footpath
3 - on a footpath but requiring a bit more of a walk
2 - On private land where permission should be sought to visit
1 - In the middle of nowhere, not on a footpath and a nightmare to find.

The final N or Y indicates whether we have a photo of this site on our web site. We would much appreciate photos of any sites, especially those marked with an N.

For sites with long names this information may be truncated.

Much more information on each location can be found on the Megalithic Portal page for the site, this will have the same name as the first part of the POI name so you can search our site using this.

These listings are up to date to February 2011.

Hello, according to this here
http://www.satmap.co.uk/satsync-features.php
the Active 10 GPS is compatible with Google Earth as it converts KML / KMZ files so download one of these from us and try importing it

More details here:
http://www.megalithic.co.uk/article.php?sid=2146412594

or for other formats and external software to convert them see here:
http://www.megalithic.co.uk/modules.php?op=modload&name=Forum&file=viewtopic&topic=3060&forum=5

I should be adding GPX downloads in a few weeks

Let us know how you get on as I've not seen those models before

I am new to GPS,and navigating in general, buying a basic Garmin model just last week. I also bought an IGN"Carte de Randonnee" for the Tuchan area of France, where we hope to visit some dolmens next month. However, the map coordinates given on the Megalithic site, and from other sources, don't bear any resemblance to my printed IGN map. Google Earth has different coordinates from both map and your given ones, and the GPS numbers on the printed map make no sense to me either!
Can you give me any guidance, please, and tell this complete beginnere what I need to do.
Thanks,
redmacgregor

Redmacgregor,
to line up our coordinates with Google Earth, go to the settings and switch Google Earth to use decimal lat long coordinates instead of Deg Min Secs (DMS). Personally I don't like DMS.

Download KML files for Google Earth from here
http://www.megalithic.co.uk/topics.php?countries=1&kmldown=1
or individual site pages (look in the right side bar)

French maps use UTM coordinates. Convert lat longs to UTM by pasting them in the box here, separated by a comma.
http://www.nearby.org.uk/coord.html

Also try our links to Geoportail French mapping from all the French site pages which should help.

Lots of useful Garmin links here

Many thanks for so many answers to so many questions! I just wish I'd asked you sooner, instead of spending days trying to figure out the impossible!

For a bit of summer solstice techie fun I have added GPX to the formats you can download from the Megalithic Portal

Data Formats now provided are:

RSS to keep track of the latest sites and news for the area - copy the link to an RSS reader
KML to view in Google Earth
GPX waypoints to load into a GPS receiver, Smartphone or other online map (XML format)
GAR is a simple CSV spreadsheet in Garmin GPS format
CSV outputs a fuller spreadsheet format to open in Excel/OpenOffice.

The main download links are here
http://www.megalithic.co.uk/topics.php?countries=1&kmldown=1

or use Search / Browse to find the Country / County / Site Type etc that you want and look for the download links right hand menu
http://www.megalithic.co.uk/search.php?query=&country=1

Downloads are limited to a maximum of 50 sites, but you can unlock unlimited downloads by signing up as a Contributory Member.

Download data is provided by the Megalithic Portal without warranty, and is licensed for personal use only. This data or any derived from it may not be reproduced on any web site or other publication without prior written permission (but please do ask).

Please let me know how you get on with these new links

Nobody tried this yet? http://www.gpsvisualizer.com is a good place to play with KMZ or GPX files you've created.
